Working blackduck decoy by John Glenn (1876-1954) of Rock Hall, Maryland. Circa 1940s. Decoy is in dry original paint with scrapes and rubs from use. Retains original rigging. Great decoy for the upper bay collector.
John (often called “Capt. John” or “Johnny”) Glenn worked out of Piney Neck / Rock Hall Maryland on the Upper Chesapeake. Glenn carved at his Piney Neck / Rock Hall home and is considered part of the Rock Hall carving tradition, the same community that produced carvers like August Heinefield and Jesse Urie.
He made working Chesapeake Bay decoys — especially canvasbacks, pintails, bluebills and some rarer puddle-duck and swan pieces. His decoys are hand-chopped with thick, bold paint patterns.
