Blackhead decoy by Charlie "Speed" Joiner (1921-2015), Chestertown, MD. Mid 1960s wide bill model with stipple paint. Branded ER, from the Ed Robinson rig. Looks like this decoy was originally a redhead with only the head being repainted at some point. Some minor rubs and scratches from its days as a working decoy.
Charlie “Speed” Joiner was a renowned decoy carver from Chestertown, Maryland, celebrated for his craftsmanship and significant contributions to the Chesapeake Bay waterfowling tradition.
Joiner studied under Madison Mitchell, a prominent carver from Havre de Grace, Maryland, and was influenced by the Ward brothers of Crisfield, Maryland. This blend of mentorship and observation helped him develop a distinctive style that combined elements from both traditions with his eye for painting.
