Barnard is recognized as a central figure in the Havre de Grace decoy-making tradition, and his work has been the subject of scholarship published in The Canvasback, the quarterly journal of the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum. He stands alongside other greats of the region — Madison Mitchell, the Holly family, and Bob McGaw — as one of the carvers who defined the Susquehanna Flats style.
