Mini Canvasback pair of decoy by Charlie "Speed" Joiner (1921-2015), Chestertown, MD. Made of balsa from WWII life rafts. Signed and dated 1962 on green bottoms. Clean, dry all original paint without repair. The paint work on these decoys is superb with a very nice patina. Extremely rare, hard to find balsa minis by Charlie Joiner.
Charlie “Speed” Joiner was a renowned decoy carver from Chestertown, Maryland, celebrated for his craftsmanship and significant contributions to the Chesapeake Bay waterfowling tradition.
Joiner studied under Madison Mitchell, a prominent carver from Havre de Grace, Maryland, and was influenced by the Ward brothers of Crisfield, Maryland. This blend of mentorship and observation helped him develop a distinctive style that combined elements from both traditions with his eye for painting.
