Fantastic miniature Mallard hen decoy by the Ward Brothers, Crisfield, MD. Signed and dated 1959. Clean, dry all original paint with beautiful patina. The paint work on this decoy is superb. Excellent decoy for the Ward collector.
The Ward Brothers—Lemuel T. Ward (1895–1984) and Steven W. Ward (1896–1976)—were renowned wildfowl decoy carvers from Crisfield, Maryland. Initially barbers by trade, they began carving decoys around 1920 to supplement their income during slow periods in their barbershop. Their work evolved from functional hunting decoys to highly detailed decorative pieces.
The Ward brothers' decoys are known for their exceptional realism, achieved through meticulous carving and painting techniques. Steve Ward primarily handled the carving, while Lem Ward focused on painting, often using stippling and sharp-edged styling to create lifelike feather patterns and vibrant speculums on ducks' wings. Their work remains a testament to the intersection of craftsmanship, artistry, and a deep connection to the natural world.
